Getting Started

If your new to the hobby there are a couple of things that you need to do before commencing to fly.

  1. You need to have insurance which is automatically provided through the ‘British Model Flying Association’ (BMFA).  You can pay you BMFA fee through the club when joining and the club will deal with everything else.  Alternatively you can join the BMFA directly but there’s no difference in cost so most people do it through the club
  2. You will need a CAA (Civil Aviation Association) Operator ID which then has to be displayed on all you models.  Again this can be done through the club and the CAA will then send you the ID via email

We have a number of instructors to help you learn to fly.  To be able to fly solo you will need to pass the BMFA ‘A’ test.  We have several examiners within the club who can conduct this test and is free of charge. ‘A’ test schedule can be found under training section.

We teach people using the Buddy box system.  This is like dual control where the instructor has the Master transmitter and the trainee uses the slave transmitter.  The Instructor has to give control to the trainee by holding a button, as soon as they let go it goes straight back the the Instructor.  This system works well and saves a lot of aircraft incidents and repairs.  They can generally Buddy up with Spektrum and sometimes Futaba makes of transmitters.
